Original title in French: L’erratisme de l’Élanion blanc [Elanus caeruleus] en France au cours du XXe siècle.
Summary in English:
The wandering of Black-shouldered Kite in France has increased since the begining of the 90’s: 75 per cent of the records for the period 1900-2001 have been obtained since then (38 records relating to 43 birds, outside the breeding range of the species in south-western France). Most of the observations have been made along the Atlantic coast (11 départements) together with southern and south-eastern France (12 départements), demonstrating the dispersal routes of the species. Records are concentrated in April and May (42%), with a secondary peak in October (10,5%). Records from other European countries show a similar pattern. It is the countries situated directly north of France (Belgium, The Netherlands, Denmark) that have also been involved in the wandering of Black-shouldered Kite since 1990.
It is believed that birds seen north of the breeding range mostly originate from the Iberian peninsula. Young fledged in south-western France (where just 6 to 8 pairs breed) hardly ever contribute to this increase of records in north-western Europe.
