Original title in French: L'Ibis sacré [Threskiornis aethiopicus] dans l'Ouest de la France : historique et statut actuel

Summary in English:
A thriving colony of free-flying Sacred Ibis [Threskiornis aethiopicus] occurred in a zoological garden in southern Brittany, western France, from the 1970s to 1997. Birds from this colony have spread to adjacent wetland areas since the early 1990s, and a feral population has developed: 450 breeding pairs were censused in 2001, with more than 300 (possibly 400-450) breeding pairs in 2004. The population size, estimated from counts at winter roosts, is over 2,500 individuals and is now spread from Morbihan in the north to Charente-Maritime in the south. Nature conservation bodies are concerned by the development of this exotic introduced species and its relationships with local species.
